Michael Ulku-Steiner
Head of School at Durham Academy
Since stumbling into teaching in the early 1990’s via a service-learning program at UNC-Chapel Hill, Mr. Ulku-Steiner has been trying to answer one burning question: what kinds of communities and experiences best allow young people to grow into their most compassionate, capable and courageous selves? He has been a tumbleweed picker; EKG technician; translator; tour guide; graduate student at Duke and Teachers College; teacher of English, Spanish and Theory of Knowledge; coach of basketball and baseball; and Dean of Students. After five years as Headmaster at The American School in Switzerland, Mr. Ulku-Steiner has served since 2013 as Head of School at Durham Academy in North Carolina.
Guy DeCarlucci
General Counsel, Private Diagnostic Clinic LLC.
Guy DeCarlucci is an attorney and certified public accountant. He has practiced law for twenty years and has been a licensed public accountant for over twenty years. He is a graduate of Penn State (undergraduate) and Duke Law School. He has advised clients on business and legal matters primarily in the health care industry. He co-founded a medical billing company, which was later sold to a medical billing company consolidator. Before obtaining his degrees, he served on active duty in the Army and attended officer candidate school.
Victoria Muradi
Director of Strategic Initiatives, Durham Academy
Victoria is the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Durham Academy in North Carolina. She oversees the PK-12 school’s strategic vision and Innovation Journey Fund. Prior to this role, she served as Director of Enrollment Management at Durham Academy from 2007 to 2021. She has led the school in shifting from an admission to an enrollment management model, determining optimum school size, and studying the comprehensive cost of attendance beyond tuition. Victoria has also worked in admission at Chatham Hall, Smith College, and The University of Virginia. Victoria holds a B.A. from Smith College and a M.Ed. from Harvard University.
Evan Kharasch
Vice Chair for Innovation, Department of Anesthesiology, Duke University
Evan D. Kharasch, MD, PhD is the Merel H. Harmel Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chair for Innovation in the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University. Kharasch is a practicing clinician, and an active basic, translational and clinical investigator. His current focus is on reducing pain and improving patient recovery trajectories.
Kharasch created and was the founding Director of The Center for Clinical Pharmacology, a joint endeavor between St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Washington University, and was founding Director of the Division of Clinical and Translational Research in Anesthesiology. He was formerly the Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesiology, the leading journal in the specialty. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine). He received his BS, MD and PhD in Pharmacology from Northwestern University.
Una Kelley
Director, Philanthropic Development, The Associated Press
Una is a Senior Program Manager at The Associated Press, where she unites her years of philanthropic grantmaking experience with her goal to strengthen an independent, non-partisan and fact-based press. In this role, she is responsible for creating and managing grant funded journalism initiatives like AP’s Democracy Initiative and its criminal justice and education reporting – and in 2023 will be launching the AP Investigative Fund. Una has an MBA degree and over 20 years of experience advancing social change goals within nonprofit, philanthropic and corporate settings. She lives in Chapel Hill NC with her three children, husband and adored family pets.
