Mentorship FAQ's
Mentors offer students insight and guidance about their field and personal experiences on researching ideas, regulatory considerations to launching their business. Learn more about how you can become a U Launch mentor and advise high school students to succeed.
Who can be a mentor?
Professionals who are, or have advised, on entrepreneurship and are willing to offer their time to advise students through whatever step they are currently taking, whether that be researching their idea, learning the regulations or seeking seed funding/applying for grants.
Subject matter expertise helps, but to mentor a future entrepreneur, you only need to know what resources are available and where to direct the Mentee. U Launch has multiple resources on it website to get you started.
Can I still mentor a student even though I just started in this career field?
Yes, you can! Our program accepts mentors from all levels of career, no matter the levels or years of experience. As a mentor, you can provide a student with insight and advice about your field and personal experiences, and it means so much more from someone who has “been there, done that!”
How big of a time commitment is this?
In a traditional connection, it is recommended and expected that you communicate with your mentee at least once every six weeks.
How will I contact my mentee?
Method(s) of communication should be agreed upon by you and your mentee. Communication may take place via email, phone, Skype, Zoom or Google Hangouts. It is the obligation of the mentee to initiate conversation with the mentor.
How will this be beneficial to me?
Students who have mentors ultimately feel better prepared to begin their career–essentially you can help contribute to the betterment of our community. Being a mentor is a great way to “give back” and offer students invaluable advice.
U Launch also offers volunteer hours to mentors under the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for the time they spent directly on mentoring.
